Who knew a girl from Dalarna, Sweden, painted in 1861 by Gottfrid Virgin, was in fact an ice witch.

Laurens Reael, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies between 1616 and 1619, was stationed in the Maluku Islands and oversaw the affairs of the company and the relations and clashes with the Spanish and the English, before falling out of grace with the directors of the company. The original portrait, painted shortly after his return to the Netherlands, only displays wealth and stature. The collage corrects this by incorporating the landscape of Ternate, where the VOC headquarters were located, local flora and fauna and the famed nutmeg which brought so much wealth to the Netherlands.

Jan Pieterszoon Coen succeeded Laurens Reael as Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies and proceeded to murder and ruthlessly exploit the inhabitants of the Maluku Islands and the Banda Island in particular, only area of the world where the prized nutmeg was produced. Here too, nutmeg takes its place in the background while Coen is wrapped in the landscape of Ambon (an island from the archipelago), defaced by the blood he spilled.
